Eliot Church is starting a new tradition of presenting Bibles to students near the end of the third grade, on Pentecost Sunday. I want to emphasize the importance of the community and the family in cultivating a healthy practice of engaging God’s Word. To that end, we are inviting the parents to come forward with their students. The liturgy includes responses for the congregation and the parents. Please adapt and use in your context with attribution.
Christian Education Chair
On behalf of the Christian Education Committee,
the Session and Pastor of NAME OF CHURCH,
I present to you these Bibles.
We have chosen the NAME OF BIBLE because
[list a few reasons this Bible was chosen.]
As third graders,
you are old enough to read these words on your own,
to study them, pray with them, and ask questions about them.
Pastor
You do not only read these words on your own.
You also come to God’s Word in the context of a community.
Congregation
We hope that as you read the Bible,
you will bring not only your faith
but also your questions and your doubts to NAME OF CHURCH
to find a loving, supporting, listening and teaching community.
We want to grow with you in faith and knowledge.
Pastor
As you read the Word in the family of God,
you also read it as part of your earthly family.
Parents
We promise to read these words with you,
to listen to your questions,
to share our ideas,
and be honest about our doubts.
We want to grow with you in faith and knowledge.
Distribute Bibles to each student, calling them by name as the Bible is presented.
Pastor
Receive the Word of God.
Learn its stories and study its words.
Its stories belong to us all,
and these words speak to us all.
They tell us who we are.
They tell us that we belong to one another,
for we are the people of God.
Students
We receive these Bibles with our hands, our hearts, and our minds.
With the help of the Holy Spirit, we will read with curiosity,
listen with openness,
and ask questions in trust.
We want to grow with you in faith and knowledge.
Pastor
Let us pray and sing together for the blessing of the Holy Spirit
on these young people as they encounter the Word of God.
All
Sing “Wa Wa Wa Emimimo” or another song that speaks of the Holy Spirit
Pastor
By the power of the Holy Spirit,
may you encounter this story as God’s living Word
for you, for this community, and for the world. Amen.
